Job Description

### Software Engineer (Experienced)

At Column Tax, we’re building the next generation of tax preparation software.
Come join us to build a delightful, transparent, and easy to use tax filing
system.

### What we are looking for at Column Tax

* Improvise, adapt, overcome. We are a lean start-up so everyone is encouraged to participate across teams, and proactively suggest solutions and solve problems
* A focus on empathy, communication and teamwork. Tax software can’t be solved alone. You will be working collaboratively with other engineers, tax analysts, product, and design on almost every project.
* The drive and excitement to create product that delights our users.
* A strong sense of ownership. Everyone at Column Tax is empowered to shape the product and engineering roadmap. We want

### What we are looking for in the role

* 6+ years of professional experience in software engineering or a related role.
* Strong desire to lead, execute, and own their own projects
* Track record of learning new languages, technologies, patterns on the job
* Comfortable working and reasoning across the stack - frontend, backend, and infrastructure.

### Day to Day

* Build tools and frameworks that enable efficient development and validation of tax coverage -- our tax analysts do the hard work of writing code and our engineers work just as hard to empower them to move quickly with quality.
* Build and extend our APIs for our partners - Our partners are key to our success. We empower our partners by writing APIs that make starting the tax filing process seamless and intuitive
* Create UI for the embedded tax platform - Work with design and the tax team to translate complicated tax code into a form that anyone can fill out

### Week to Week

**Week 1**

* Meet everyone at Column Tax and get a run down of what everyone does here
* Get set up and push your first commit to production.
* Fix 1-2 small bugs to help you get acclimated to the code base

**Month 1**

* Lead and ship your own small sized project
* Review other engineer’s technical specs and pull requests
* Demo your work at our company all-hands!

**Month 3**

* Participate in scoping, spec-ing, and breaking down medium to large scale projects
* Help to shape our team best practices by writing internal documentation, suggesting new practices, and mentoring peers.

### Interview Process

**Step 1: Intro call with one of our founders / senior leadership**
We want to get to know you and for you to get to know us! On this call, we
will talk about your professional background, what types of problems you like
to solve, and what you want out of your next job. It’s also your opportunity
to ask with any questions you have about the business, and how else we would
be able to support you.

**Step 2: Take home technical exercise**
Coding live on a zoom can be stressful and nerve wracking. We give candidates
a take-home assignment - time-boxed to 3 hours - to be done any time that is
most convenient for you. It is your time to shine by showing off your
experience, creativity, and coding style.

**Step 3: On-site interview**
Our virtual onsite interview consists of a system design, product review, and
pair programming challenge. Here, more of our team members will get the
opportunity to meet you and you’ll be able to get a better sense of our team
works together. The onsite is expected to be around 3-4 hours total.

**Step 4: Offer!**
At Column Tax, we’re committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic
workplace. If you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t
align perfectly with everything in the job description, we still encourage you
to apply. You might be the right person for the role and we’d love the
opportunity to meet you!
