**Who Are We?**
Math ANEX is working to create a world where kids have more choice in creating
their future. We believe we can accomplish that by helping to create a better
education system. To do that, we partner with schools to provide high quality
assessments, analysis and reporting that help to create a better understanding
of how students are thinking, what skillsets they have and what tools they are
using to show everyone from kids to school leaders where students are coming
from and what next steps we can take to improve everyone’s education
experience.

After we identify how students are thinking, our professional learning team
coaches the teachers on how to implement best practices in their classrooms
based on our data. And then we measure the improvements, which can be quite
substantial!

To start this journey, Math ANEX is working with Public School Math
Departments across the country to change how math is assessed and thought
about. Instead of looking narrowly at students by scoring items as correct or
incorrect, we look deeper into the ways that students think about mathematics.
Even students that may get an incorrect answer often show evidence of
successful tool use that have been misapplied. With feedback and re-engagement
students can build upon their existing toolbox, or see the need to extend
their mathematical tools. We call this an "asset based" approach to
assessment.

For the past couple of decades, our CEO, Patrick Callahan, has worked to
improve Math education by building high quality math performance tests for
Math Assessments across the nation, consulted with school districts across the
world to improve their Math Departments and change the way Math is taught and
assessed.

Jeremy Thiesen, our President and Head of Product, was a Statistician before
starting a few companies, raising money, graduating Techstars, and having his
last company successfully acquired.

In the last 24 months, we have worked to change the way Math departments
analyze student thinking with hundreds of thousands of students. And we are
looking to grow that number to millions in the next couple of years. And that
is where you come in.

**Who Are You?**
You love to code and feel comfortable taking over a large code base written in
python (using Django) and react. You love jumping into all sorts of situations
from parsing text in multiple languages to figuring out a good solution to
optimizing database queries to building a new page for our teachers/operations
team/etc. to use.

At the same time as getting deep into the code, you love to consider the long
term architectural decisions and figure out how to balance re-factoring (yes,
you’ll get time for it) and pushing ahead on new features.

**Short Term**
You will be the first full time software developer and will take over the code
written by Jeremy and a contractor.

We’ll have you ramp up on some small feature needs across our teams while you
gain comfort over the codebase, quickly leading to you being the key decision
maker on how things get built.

Current projects we have range from making it easier for our analysts to read
and tag student answers/thinking, make our reporting more supportive for
teachers to understand next steps, helping to automatically parse student
writing and make sure we can support a school district with 60,000 students
taking assessments on our platform in the fall.

And as we grow, you'll personally have the opportunity to either lead a
development team or hopefully grow to become CTO at a high growth startup or
if leadership isn't where you see your career going, you could become a deeply
thoughtful expert on programming in the education industry. We need both!

**Long Term**
In the long run, our goal is to be able to analyze student thinking on an
ongoing basis by extracting information from a variety of student work.
Analytic feedback and progress monitoring can occur naturally as part of the
learning experience without burdening students or teachers. We will then be
able to accurately predict what the best next thing for a student/teacher to
do and be able to support them either through pre-made content, expert help or
exercises that help refine their thinking.

And in time, we will expand beyond Math into other subject areas to help guide
and improve education for everyone.

**Benefits**
Health Care
Remote Work (You can travel the world and work if you’d like)
Work Directly with Founders (High Impact)
Flexible Hours (Just be present for team meetings, currently 9am PST)
End of Year Profit Share

**Application Tips**
We only consider applications that tell us why you personally care about Math
ANEX.
Additionally, it is helpful if you talk about why you are excited about the
work required in the job.
