The Explanation Company (explanation.com) is hiring an experienced React
Native mobile engineer to lead our efforts in building an ambitious app that
works across iOS and Android, tablets and phones. We plan to eventually expand
to web and desktop platforms as well.
You'll report to our CEO, a seasoned entrepreneur, engineer, and former
product manager for Facebook Messenger and News Feed. We’re a remote-first,
distributed team within the four time zones of the continental U.S. We also
get together 2-3 times per year.
**What You 'll Do**
You'll join a small, skilled engineering team in a role we hope will be a
defining one in your career. You’ll take a lead role on our React Native app
implementing new features, polishing the experience, and making the UI fast.
This client interacts with a Ruby on Rails API. There is a lot of surface
area, but we’ve prepared for this so you aren’t stepping into a mess. You’ll
have other senior engineers to collaborate with when you need a sounding
board.
You'll work on a product that's already found product-market fit. Yet, the
code base still needs upgrades for speed and reliability. You'll design,
build, and own key features like an interactive chat experience, the video
calling interface, and our component library. We are pushing the limits of
React Native with custom modules to tap into native functionality, leveraging
the latest Expo features such as over-the-air updates, and plans to keep up
with new functionality such as file-based routing.
On the team, you’ll work closely with two other engineers who know React
Native very well. In addition, you’ll collaborate closely with a senior
designer and be supported by a team of two senior backend engineers.
**What You 'll Bring**
You bring deep experience in mobile development. You likely have 5+ years of
experience with React Native and also significant experience with Swift and
Xcode plus Kotlin and Android Studio. When you run into a tricky React Native
bug that throws an exception deep in the mobile stack, you know how to eject
the application, the project in Xcode to make sense of the stack trace or
diagnose a memory leak.
You also bring a strong design and product sense. You’ve worked closely with
talented designers and are excited to tweak a subtle animation until it’s just
right. You’ve built and maintained a custom component library to ensure
consistent experience across the app, especially with multiple engineers
working on it.
You like working in a fast-paced environment. You’ll be joining a small team
that likes to ship quickly, making incremental progress forward. We merge into
staging a half dozen times each day with our continuous integration process
running in 10 minutes. Internally, we all use the latest build and then we
deploy new features to production 2-3 times per week after QA testing them.
You’re comfortable working in a remote environment. You are strong at
communicating complex thoughts in writing and value clear communication.
You’re comfortable working in an ambiguous environment. We set clear goals as
a team, but you won’t receive specs and timelines. You’ll be the one asking
questions to unpack complex problems, ensuring you understand the product &
business needs, and communicating your plan to solve problems.
