Smarkets is an exchange platform for betting on sports and politics. We
operate two main consumer products - the Smarkets exchange and SBK sportsbook
app - in the UK, US and other global markets which has handled £29 billion in
traded volume since 2010. Our goal is to fix the sports betting industry by
creating a transparent platform that offers the best value for users, with not
only the best odds but also the latest technology, alongside an amazing
customer experience.

Building all our technology in house comes with a lot of exciting technical
challenges to work on - designing and operating a real-time distributed
exchange system that runs 24/7 all year long; creating and pricing 100s of
thousands of contracts concurrently - from football and horse racing to
politics and current events; developing slick and optimized mobile and web
clients empowering users get the best betting experience from our products.

We are searching for an experienced Head of Engineer to lead and grow our
engineering team. The engineering team is at the heart of everything we do and
as such this is a key hire that will report to the Chief Product Officer. The
Head of Engineering will be empowered to structure the engineering team and
shape product development at a company renowned for its technical care and
excellence.

**What you 'll be responsible for?**

* Providing technical and cultural leadership to engineering teams
* Creating a team culture that attracts and retains the best talent
* Ensuring that our engineering teams consistently deliver the right things at the right time
* Owning the software development processes from start to finish
* Ensuring scalability and reliability of a large-scale microservices-based software architecture
* Representing the engineering team internally
* Promoting Smarkets as a tech company externally

**About You**

* Experience in growing and managing engineering teams of size 50+
* Provide leadership and mentorship to direct reports on how to manage high performing teams that deliver continuous improvement, added value and cost reductions.
* Background in consumer tech
* Highly technical with a proven experience of building scalable and resilient software stacks
* A decisive individual who deals well with uncertainty and thrives on challenge
* Ability and willingness to change course quickly and a bias towards action
* Excellent communicator in both spoken and written form
* Cares deeply about the product you are putting in the hands of customers
* Maintains high energy and a contagious enthusiasm for technical challenge
