passion for front-end, a desire to collaborate, and a comfort with ambiguity.
### Who are we?
Inkpen is a San Francisco Bay Area based startup building an Edtech
marketplace with a mission to make live lessons reachable to more people. We
are doing this by creating a unique business model which brings value to both
learners and educators.
We have found a product-market fit with our other EdTech startup where we have
taught thousands of students in the field of performing arts. Now we are on
the mission to build a scalable global marketplace and make live classes
available to everyone.

### What are we looking for?
You're excited by our vision, eager to contribute to it, and energized by our
ambiguity. You're ready to write a lot of code, and comfortable throwing a lot
of that out as we test and iterate, especially since you'll be an integral
part of driving that iteration. You're happy working in an unstructured
environment, and eager to create the structure it lacks.
"Founding engineer" is a fuzzy term, and for us it covers a range. If your
aspirations are to become VP Engineering or a CTO, we'd like to help you get
there. If you'd rather be heads-down building product for the foreseeable
future, great. But either way, the latter will be your focus in the near term.
Skill-wise, here's what we're looking for:
4+ years in a full-time engineering role
Grounding in CS fundamentals—you've got the broad-based knowledge needed to
build an application end to end. You may need to pick up some new platforms &
skills along the way but you're good at that and it's fun for you.
Familiarity with and passion for web front-end work, ideally React.
Familiarity with and passion for back-end server work, ideally Node.js.
You enjoy delivering delightful, polished front ends. You needn't be a
designer—but you enjoy working with them and appreciate the work that goes
into achieving that polish and delight.
An interest in product strategy, a desire to collaborate, resonance with our
values, and a sense of humor. A willingness to step on others' toes
respectfully and kindly, and to have the same done to you.
### Key skills and competencies
* You’re able to empathise with users and quickly grasp the issues they’re facing.
* You find simple, elegant solutions to hard problems.
* You are well organised and have no problems meeting strict deadlines.
* Strong problem-solving skills with a natural flair for identifying opportunities for design or procedural improvement.
* You are not afraid to experiment with new technologies outside your comfort zone.
* You are able to multitask, prioritise, and handle time effectively.
* You have a competitive mindset — always want to be at the top of the leaderboard.
### Bonus points
* Experience building, integrating and shipping applications or frameworks in a SaaS company or fast-growing startup.
* Experience building marketplaces or eCommerce platforms.
* Startup or entrepreneurial experience.
