At oVice, we are building a virtual real estate platform, helping to bridge
the gap between the real and digital world. We redefine online communication
to be as immersive and natural as possible. Our virtual spaces are designed to
match real physical places to provide a more natural way of online
communication, helping people connect, build, and deepen relationships.
oVice has been expanding and growing month over month since our launch in
August 2020. Although based in Japan, our team is global and we work fully
remote. We’re looking for talented people who are keen on using new technology

### About the role
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team. You will lead a
team of passionate, talented engineers that are building the next standard for
remote work and flexible life style. In this role, you will introduce tools
and processes to make our engineer’s lives better. You will play an active
part in shaping product strategy based on what’s technically possible. You
will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering
standpoint.
You bring a passion for meeting business needs with building technically
innovative solutions and excel at shifting between the two—understanding how
big-picture goals inform technical details, and vice-versa. You thrive in a
fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience in delivering
scalable distributed systems. Most importantly, you will have a track record
of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.
### What you’ll do
oVice is a growing company and engineering is an ever-evolving organization
with teams being formed and redefined often. Here are some of the things that
are on-going and future road maps.
**Application rewrite (PHP → Elixir)**
The initial version of oVice is based on PHP/Vue, but we’re rebuilding the
application in Elixir/React.
While we’re still small, we’ve experienced extremely high growth, and we want
to rebuild the system to make sure we are in good hands to scale for even more
in the near future.
**Platform APIs and Marketplace**
We have a strong demand on customization of our platform and we will be
bringing that power to users by opening up our APIs. Think of APIs like
Stripe, Shopify and Slack where you can use their APIs to expand the tool that
you’re using. We want to bring that into oVice as well so customers can build
all kinds of integration with services they use in their day to day work.
**WebRTC**
Scaling our communication systems internationally is a big goal this year. We
want to be able to improve on latency, and also provide better debugging and
support for users experiencing network issues.
There are definitely a lot more exciting things going on, and would we will
love to have you provide input on how we can improve our platform as well!
### What you’ll need
* 3+ years experience in engineering management
* Experience in a SaaS environment with some degree of operational ownership of the systems that your team builds.
* Solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in algorithms, data structures, software design, and building large, distributed systems
* Excel at planning, creating teams, and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability
* Demonstrate a track record of managing a team including hiring, onboarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to reach higher. You’re as good as explaining “why” as you are “how”
* Experience implementing tools, process, internal instrumentation, methodologies and resolving blockages
* Understands when to balance on doing things the right way vs when shortcuts should be made to achieve business goals
### Bonus points
* Familiarity working with WebRTC, database systems, Internet performance, and/or security

We are a fully remote team, distributed among multiple countries. Our members
mainly resides in the following time zones,

* UTC ~ UTC+2 (Europe, North Africa)
* UTC+8 ~ UTC+10 (Asia Pacific)
