Everyday Speech is a leader in Social-Emotional Learning. Primarily a teaching
solution for public schools, our Social-Emotional Learning Platform (SELP)
provides educators with curriculum materials for students of ALL ages across
special education and general education classes. Our curriculums teach
students the strategies and life skills they need to regulate their emotions,
solve problems, cope with the stresses of modern life, and interact with the
world around them. Our platform is used by 45,000+ educators at public schools
and private educational institutions around the world.

**Everyday Speech is right for you if:**

**You care about making a positive impact**.
End each day knowing that your work had a direct impact on the well-being of
hundreds of thousands of at-risk students across the world. Project success
means more than just shipping features - it means improving the lives of
students and educators.

**You value being a part of a company that takes care of its team.**
Not only do we have [extremely happy team
members](https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Everyday-Speech-
Reviews-E5371232.htm), we also have incredible perks. Participate in our
health/wellness and retirement benefit offerings, and between having every
other Friday off (3-day weekends!) and our flexible PTO plan, that elusive
work-life balance is an actual thing here.

**You want to work for a true, remote-only company.**
We’ve never had an office and never will. Our team is spread across 11
countries and 4 continents. We take remote work seriously and know how to
support a distributed team. We give you the flexibility to work in a way
that’s best for you, but still have high standards and accountability.

**You want to join a startup that is growing rapidly _and_ sustainably.**
We have launched new products, maintained NPS scores of 50+, maintained eNPS
(internal, employee score) of 90+, rapidly grown our team, and exponentially
increased our user base, all over the last few years. Yet, as a fully
bootstrapped company, our growth is organic and sustainable. Our focus is
delivering value to students and educators, not paying back investors.

The **Director of Engineering** will be responsible for leading our growing
engineering team and shaping the future of our products and platform. We are
seeking someone with a background in software development and engineering
management who is energized by cultivating an environment of trust and
empathy, loves to figure out what makes a great engineering team “great”, and
can create the systems and practices that help us prioritize and create
momentum.

Your work will have a significant impact on our product and our company’s
growth, directly influencing the educational experience of a vast number of
students that we support today and in the future.

**In this role, you will:**

**Lead, manage, and grow our engineering organization:** Ensure that we have
great people focused on the impactful product efforts and working in a way
that builds empathy for our educator users and for our teammates.

**Be accountable for all software development:** Ensure that the team is
continuously delivering high-quality, scalable, reliable, and secure software
that aligns with our strategies and goals.

**Align with organizational strategy:** Work closely with the Executive Team,
engineering leaders, and product management peers to define an engineering
strategy that is focused on and builds momentum towards our company strategy.

**Partner cross-functionally:** Collaborate and build trust with other
departments including design, product management, and marketing so we can
prioritize our efforts to best meet the needs of our company, educators, and
students.

**What We’re Looking For:**

**Leadership and culture building:** Ability to lead and motivate an
engineering team that is relentlessly getting better, always focusing on the
most important work, and creating an environment of candidness, trust, and
empathy.

**Communication and collaboration:** Ability to sustain transparency and
effective collaboration within the team and across departments.

**Technical strategy and innovation:** Experience defining and implementing a
technical strategy that supports the organization's mission and strategy,
factors in industry trends, and inspires the team towards creating excellent
products.

**Product development breadth:** Experience with developing products in a
variety of environments including different industries, go-to-market
strategies (e.g. B2B, B2C, SaaS), maturity levels (0->1, scale-up), and
technical disciplines (front-end web development, infrastructure, mobile).

**Customer focus and business acumen:** Ability to both gain deep empathy for
our users and their needs as well as see the challenges across customers and
align engineering efforts to business objectives to meet all users.

**Data-driven and delivery excellence:** Experience continuously refining
engineering practices, using data to measure quality and innovation momentum,
and creating systems to get us where we want.

**Skills & Experience Requirements:**

* Strong leadership skills with a focus on cultivating engineering excellence, mentorship, and inclusive collaboration.
* Experience leading remote/distributed engineering teams
* Experience hiring, retaining, and coaching engineers and engineering managers across a range of performance needs.
* Experience developing technical strategies and executing those strategies including project management and building alignment with leadership and stakeholders.
* Deep understanding of software development practices and delivery methodologies across a variety of product lifecycles and technical needs.
* At least 3 years of experience in a Director-level role or similar overseeing multiple Engineering teams.

**In the first 3 months, you will:**

**Onboard and assess:** Familiarize yourself with the team, products, tech
stack, and current strategic focuses. Build key relationships and conduct an
initial assessment of the engineering processes and team dynamics. Identify
gaps and areas for improvement.

**Lead and focus the team on our current strategy:** Collaborate with
leadership to understand product and market nuances. Gain a deep understanding
of current product and company strategy. Begin creating and refining projects,
plans, and practices to meet our medium-to-long-term aims.

**In the long term, you will:**

**Continuously build momentum:** Focus on team building, mentoring, and
professional development and learn from those conversations so you can solve
for gaps in the overall abilities of the team. Help the team to continuously
prioritize the most impactful work first, and discover new ways for the
engineering team to deliver better systems, processes, and products.

**Lead engineering vision, strategy, and innovation:** Adapt our technical
strategies to align with business objectives and market trends. Partner with
engineering leaders to create a shared vision of technical excellence and
innovation and with our product leaders to realize the best products for our
educators.

**Manage strategic execution:** Guide major engineering projects from concept
to shipped to continuously-improved. Partner with leadership and internal
stakeholders to adhere to budgets and align to customer needs. Maintain strong
communication and trust in all engineering activities.

**Note: We are only able to consider US-based candidates for this role.**
