Job Description

Runebook is looking for our first Founding Engineer to help build the next
evolution of runbook automation and magical developer workflows. Someone who’s
excited and motivated by making developers’ lives easier and more enjoyable –
from the ground up.

### The Role

* Help design and build the first evolution of Runebook services and applications, with a _hyper_ -focus on developer experience, quality, and anti-painting-yourself-into-a-corner-ness (that’s definitely a word).
* You’ll work with the founders day-in, day-out, to help determine the company’s product vision, roadmap and direction.
* Help the CTO define Runebook’s Engineering Culture as we grow.
* Work throughout the stack, both front-end and back-end. We use Ruby and Typescript/Next.js currently. We’ll likely use other languages and technologies down the line – part of this role is to help make those decisions.

### About You

* 5+ years of experience as an Engineer, preferably leading the technical direction of a developer tool product.
* Experience with Ruby or a similar language (Python, JS/TS, etc) and strong opinions about what makes good OOP code and codebases. Software craftsmanship is a core part of our culture.
* You have experience with both front-end and back-end languages and frameworks. This person can lean more back-end, but being able to, at least, confidently talk about front-end tools/design is important.
* You’re motivated by having an outsized impact on both _what_ we build and _how_ we build it.
* You’re okay with the level of product uncertainty that comes from an early stage company. The direction we go in may not change at all or may change completely.
* You’re first and foremost motivated by building developer tools that people actively enjoy using. We’re a developer experience obsessed team.
* You say “I don’t know” all the time. We’re only interested in people who aren’t concerned with appearing to know everything. None of us do, and that’s great.
* You lead with empathy and compassion in everything you do.

### Bonus Points

* Deep experience with distributed systems, particularly ones that resemble workflow engines.
* You have strong opinions about APIs, architecture, and codebase organization.
* You’re excited about all the fun sci-fi/fantasy themed things Runebook can do with their brand 🧙.

### About Us

Currently it’s just Peter and Matte – the founders of Runebook. We have a ton
of experience in the dev tools, observability, and ecosystem spaces at
companies like Heroku, New Relic, Sentry, and Mezmo/LogDNA.

Runebook is very young. We’re honing in our initial MVP based on our
experience and knowledge of the space, as well as conversations we’ve had with
Developers and SREs. It’s a really fun time to be a part of the evolution of
our product, codebase, culture, etc.

### Comp & Benefits

* Salary: $125k - $165k USD
* Equity range: 0.5 - 1.5%
* Full health and dental/vision premiums covered by Runebook.
* Home Office/In-Office stipend.
* Flexible and generous PTO (we take plenty of time off and expect you to do the same).
* We’re protective of our nights and weekends – work life balance is important to us.
