Job Description

### About Us

DIY Earth’s mission is to coordinate and scale grassroots sustainability
innovation by radically increasing investment in new and small-scale projects.
We are a marketplace for projects and ideas, backed by a financial platform
that drives funds into the hands of startup and scaleup innovators. We support
companies, projects, and people with the knowledge, tools and confidence to
make better climate decisions.

Our small founding team combines climatic and earth sciences, carbon markets
and financial research, public policy, machine learning and product expertise.

Curiosity, technical acumen and a profound interest in scientific research sit
at the heart of DIY.

We have already seen strong adoption of our first product offering, and are
raising an early funding round to further our mission to accelerate innovative
climate action.

### Why you'll like working with us:

* **Career defining work.** Come and work on some of the most cutting edge problem sets, and do something you’ll be proud of for the rest of your career
* **World-class team.** Work among the best of the best. Our team comprises experts, including PhDs and world-leading scientists, analysts and product leaders with decades of experience from some of the world's top institutions.
* **Compensation and benefits.** Competitive compensation, equity and extensive benefits package.
* **Flexible.** We're interested in results and energy, not clock-watching. We offer flexible working hours and the ability to work from home.
* **Growth.** Many of our roles didn’t exist a few years ago, so there's plenty to learn, and room to plot your own course. We also assign each of our team members a personal development budget and a mentor, generally a top-tier expert from our network.

### The job

We seek a Director of Engineering to join the technology leadership team at
DIY Earth. This hands-on role involves leading and expanding our software
engineering teams (currently two engineers in the UK, with plans for rapid
growth). You'll guide the development of our client-facing products, APIs,
website, and other tools.

**Responsibilities:**

* Technical leadership: Provide hands-on leadership, setting technical direction, and contributing to the codebase.
* Vision: Collaborate with the founders to establish a clear technology vision.
* Engineering delivery: Oversee all engineering changes, ensuring outcomes meet objectives with efficient, scalable, and reliable systems.
* Technical design: Ensure coherent technical designs and enforce technical standards.
* Decisions: Lead and expedite key technical decisions in alignment with DIY's goals.
* Team leadership: Hire, coach, promote, and retain a high-performing engineering team.
* Excellence: Foster a culture of technical ownership and excellence, motivating teams with a compelling technical vision.

**Stack:**
Our technology stack supports a scalable web application with efficient data
workflows and developer-focused APIs:

* Frontend: NextJS/React/TypeScript with Tailwind CSS.
* Backend: Primarily Python, with additional tools and libraries as needed.
* APIs: REST API for seamless developer integration.
* Smart contracts: Solidity for Polygon blockchain.
* Infrastructure: AWS and Azure.
* Data pipelines: Advanced data workflows using D3 and other technologies to support research and analysis.

### Candidate profile

* 5+ years as a senior software engineer, or more, with strong focus on building data-intensive products.
* 3+ years managing teams in a modern product environment; capable of handling teams of 20+ people.
* Experience in developing and implementing DevOps, SRE, and security processes.
* Background in high-growth technology startups.
* Strong skills in cloud-based infrastructure, particularly with AWS, Azure and GCP.
* Broad experience across multiple stacks and industries. Proficiency with Python, TypeScript, and React is essential. Foundational knowledge of the Polygon blockchain is a plus.
* Experience in building robust, secure REST APIs and working with complex data workflows and architectures.

In short, we're looking for a seasoned, hands-on leader who can drive
technical excellence and innovation within our growing engineering team. This
"playing coach" will lead by example, directly contributing to our projects
while guiding and mentoring the team.

### What we offer:

* Compensation: Competitive salary and equity through share options in a rapidly growing, VC-backed startup.
* Professional development: Opportunities to learn from experts in science, economics, business, finance, and other fields.
* Leave: 25 days of leave, additional time off for holidays and for your birthday.
* Benefits: Comprehensive package including private medical insurance, dental, critical illness cover, income protection, life assurance, medical cash plan, and cycle to work scheme (or equivalent if overseas).
* Wellness: Health and wellness cash allowance.
* Parental Leave: Enhanced parental leave policy.
* Community: Regular social events.
* Flexibility: Option to work remotely, with some essential in-person work each week, or in our London (Old Street) headquarters or Vancouver (downtown) office.
